Specifying Commercial Washroom Worktops
Edge profile, substrate and setting-out decide whether a vanity top lasts five years or fifteen. Here is how to get all three right first time.

A washroom worktop fails at the edge and at the wall junction, not in the middle. Water sits at the front lip where hands drip, and it tracks behind the top where the tiles meet it. The edge profile and the upstand detail are therefore the two decisions that matter most, well before decor.
We postform, machine and edge worktops on our own lines in Bolton. Worktops, table tops and postformed panels run at eight to ten working days. For healthcare projects, HTM 63 sets expectations for fitted worktops and storage — we cover that separately rather than repeating it here.
What we supply
-
Worktops cut to size
Vanity tops, counters and table tops machined to your survey with cut-outs for basins, taps and wastes. Worktops and postformed panels run at eight to ten working days.

Cantilever leg support
Where there is no carcass under the top, cantilever legs carry it off the wall and keep the floor clear for cleaning. Standard legs dispatch within 24 hours.

Healthcare worktops
HTM 63 sets the expectations for fitted worktops and storage in NHS estates. We have written that up separately rather than summarising it badly here.
What is HTM 63? -
Vanity units and IPS
Where the top and the duct are one assembly we build them together, so the basin cut-out, the panel and the access opening are coordinated before anything is cut.

Specification
| Profile or element | How it is made | Specify it when |
|---|---|---|
| Square edge | Flat board with ABS or PVC banding applied to the exposed faces. Typically 25mm or 30mm. | Budget-led fit-outs and dry areas where a straight minimal detail is wanted. The banding line is the wear point — keep it out of standing water. |
| Postformed front edge | High pressure laminate wrapped over a machined radius on an MDF or MR MDF core. Typically 30–40mm. | Washroom vanity tops and counters. No seam at the front where hands and water hit, so there is nothing to lift. |
| Full bullnose | Laminate wrapped over a radius on both the top and the underside of the front edge. | Where the top is seen from above and below — reception counters, island units, low-level tops in schools and nurseries. |
| Integral upstand | A postformed or built-up return at the back of the top, formed with the surface. | Against a tiled or painted wall, to stop water tracking behind the top instead of relying on a silicone bead alone. |
| Compact grade laminate top | Solid CGL machined to shape with a polished edge. Typically 13mm. | Wet rooms, changing rooms, pool areas and heavy-duty public use. No core to swell if the edge sits in standing water. |
| Trespa TopLab top | Laboratory grade compact, polished edge. Typically 13mm. Lead time 7–9 working days. | Science and prep rooms, technician benches and healthcare applications with chemical or heat exposure. |
| Substrate | MFC for dry areas, MR MDF for washrooms and splash zones, FR MDF where a fire retardant core is called for. | Chosen by zone, not by budget. Fire performance depends on the laminate and core specified — certificate on request. |
| Cut-outs and support | Basin, tap and waste cut-outs machined on CNC. Cantilever or pedestal legs where no carcass sits under the top. | Send the basin make and model with the survey. A generic hole size is the most common cause of a remake. |
Why buy direct from the manufacturer
-
Postforming done in house
We run our own postforming line in Bolton rather than buying wrapped tops in, so a bespoke length or a non-standard radius is a machine setting, not a subcontract.
-
Cut to your sanitaryware
Basin, tap and waste cut-outs are machined from the make and model you give us, not from a nominal hole size taken off a layout drawing.
-
Support quoted together
Cantilever legs, brackets and upstands are quoted with the top, so the fixings arrive with the worktop instead of holding up the fit two days later.
Common questions
Square edge or postformed?
Postformed for anything that gets wet at the front edge, which is most washroom vanity tops. The laminate wraps over the radius so there is no seam at the point where water and hands hit it. Square edge is cheaper and perfectly good in dry areas, but the banding line is where a square edged top eventually fails.
Do I need an integral upstand?
If the top runs against a tiled or painted wall, yes. A silicone bead alone will eventually let water track behind the top and into the substrate. An integral upstand is formed with the surface so there is no joint at the back edge. Where the wall is badly out of true, a scribed upstand is the alternative.
What substrate should a washroom worktop be?
MR MDF for standard commercial washrooms, because it handles steam, splashing and daily cleaning. Compact grade laminate where the top is in a wet room, changing room or pool environment and may sit in standing water. FR MDF where the specification calls for a fire retardant core. MFC is a dry-side board only.
How does the cut-to-size process work?
Send a dimensioned sketch or survey showing the wall run, any returns, the basin make and model, and which edges are on show. We confirm the setting-out back to you, machine the cut-outs on CNC, postform or edge as specified, then deliver. Worktops and postformed panels run at eight to ten working days.
Can you supply worktops for NHS projects?
Yes. HTM 63 covers the expectations for fitted worktops and storage in healthcare estates, and we manufacture to those requirements. We keep that guidance on its own page rather than paraphrasing it here. Tell us the trust standard or the project specification at enquiry stage and we will build the tops to it.
What is the fire performance of a laminate worktop?
It depends on the laminate and the core specified, so we will not put a single classification against a product. If the project calls for a fire retardant core we build on FR MDF and send the certificate that applies to that exact build-up. Ask at enquiry stage so it is priced correctly from the start.
