FAQ
Common Questions
Sizing, cutting & ordering FR MDF
What is FR MDF?
FR MDF (Flame Retardant MDF) is a standard MDF board that has been treated during manufacture to improve its reaction-to-fire performance. It is typically identifiable by a red-dyed core and is commonly specified for commercial and regulated interior environments.
What's the maximum panel size I can order?
Our FR MDF is supplied from sheets measuring 3050×1220mm. Your cut panels must fit within these dimensions — the builder will warn you if any panel is too large.
How is pricing calculated?
Boards are priced per full sheet based on how many sheets your cut list requires (using total area and a 0.9 yield factor). Cutting is charged at £1.00 per panel (ex VAT). Live prices update instantly in the builder.
Is edging available on FR MDF?
No — edging is not available on this product. If you require an edged finish, please contact us to discuss your project and we may be able to suggest an alternative.
Can I order a sample first?
Yes — use the "Order sample" button to receive a FR MDF material piece delivered in an envelope, so you can check the surface quality before committing to a full order.
Which thickness should I choose?
6mm and 9mm are suited to lightweight linings and backing panels. 12mm and 18mm are the most common general-purpose thicknesses. 25mm is used where greater rigidity or load-bearing is needed. If you're unsure, feel free to contact us.
What fire classification does FR MDF meet?
FR MDF is typically classified to Class 1 / Class 0 reaction-to-fire. Always confirm the required fire classification and installation requirements with your project spec / Building Control before ordering.
How should I finish FR MDF panels?
For best results, seal and prime all faces — especially cut edges — before applying topcoats. FR MDF machines and paints similarly to standard MDF but take care not to compromise the fire-retardant treatment when finishing.
Built for regulated environments

FR MDF combines the workability of standard MDF with improved reaction-to-fire performance — the go-to substrate for commercial fit-outs, public buildings, and any project where a fire-rated panel is specified.

WHY FR MDF
  • Smooth faces that prime and paint consistently
  • Clean CNC routing and crisp edges with sharp tooling
  • Cut-to-size parts reduce on-site trimming and waste
  • Multiple thickness options for weight vs rigidity trade-offs
  • Easy to identify on site — often red-dyed core
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
  • Wall linings, partitions and screen panels
  • Ceiling rafts, soffits and bulkheads
  • Shopfitting and commercial fit-out (non-structural)
  • Signage backers, displays and exhibition build
  • Feature walls and slatted panel builds

Typical uses for Flame Retardant MDF (FR MDF)

FR MDF is a paint-ready, easy-machining substrate used in dry internal spaces where a fire-rated panel is specified. It's commonly chosen for public and commercial fit-outs because it offers MDF workability with improved reaction-to-fire performance.

Common applications

  • Wall linings, partitions and screen panels in regulated interiors
  • Ceiling rafts, soffits, bulkheads and service access panels
  • Shopfitting and commercial fit-out components (non-structural)
  • Signage backers, housings, displays and exhibition build
  • Feature walls, slatted panels and acoustic builds (as a stable substrate)

Why FR MDF works well

  • Smooth faces that prime and paint consistently
  • Clean CNC routing and crisp edges with sharp tooling
  • Cut-to-size parts reduce on-site trimming and waste
  • Multiple thickness options for weight vs rigidity trade-offs
  • Easy to identify on site (often red-dyed core)
Finishing note: For best results, seal/prime all faces and especially cut edges before applying topcoats. Always confirm the required fire classification and installation requirements with your project spec / Building Control.
