How to Choose the Right Toilet Cubicle Material for Your Project

Introduction

Choosing the right toilet cubicle material is the most important specification decision you will make. Specify the wrong material and you could be looking at premature failure, costly replacement and disruption within a few years. Specify the right one and your cubicles will last 15–20 years or more with minimal maintenance.

The Four Main Cubicle Materials

There are four main materials used for commercial toilet cubicle panels in the UK: MFC, MR MFC, CGL (also known as Solid Grade Laminate) and Trespa. Each has its place — the key is matching the material to the environment.

MFC: Melamine Faced Chipboard

MFC is the standard material for dry internal environments. A chipboard core is surfaced with a melamine laminate. It is cost-effective and performs well in offices, dry school washrooms and retail. The critical limitation is moisture — chipboard absorbs water, causing swelling and delamination. Use MFC for offices, dry school washrooms and retail. Do not use for swimming pools, leisure centres, outdoor washrooms or holiday parks.

MR MFC: Moisture Resistant MFC

MR MFC uses a moisture-resistant chipboard core. It tolerates elevated humidity in changing rooms and sports facilities that are not pool-side, but it is not fully waterproof. Use for school changing rooms and moderate-humidity environments. Do not use for direct water contact or outdoor applications.

CGL: Compact Grade Laminate

CGL is a solid-core laminate with no chipboard substrate — the same material all the way through. It is 100% waterproof, chemical resistant, impact resistant and hygienic. CGL is the specified material for swimming pools, leisure centres, holiday parks, healthcare and high-traffic public facilities. Use CGL wherever moisture, humidity or heavy use is expected.

Trespa: Premium HPL

Trespa is a high-pressure laminate designed for external use. UV-stable, fully waterproof and resistant to extreme environments. More expensive than CGL, specified where external exposure or premium specification is required.

Summary
