The benefits of using Compact Laminate for your Kitchen Worktop

Compact laminate is a slim, solid worktop material that is waterproof all the way through. Here's what it is, why it works so well in a home kitchen, and the honest trade-offs to know before you buy.

A compact laminate worktop is just 13mm thick, yet it is solid all the way through: no chipboard, no MDF, nothing inside to swell if water gets in. That makes it one of the most practical choices for the busiest surface in the house. We cut compact laminate kitchen worktops to your exact sizes in our Bolton factory, give every edge a slight round, and deliver them kerbside in 2–4 working days.

What is compact laminate?

Compact laminate (also called solid laminate or compact grade laminate) is made from many layers of resin-impregnated paper, pressed together under high heat and pressure until they fuse into one solid sheet. A decorative top layer gives the colour or pattern; the layers beneath it form a dense core that is black right through.

A standard laminate worktop is built differently: a thin layer of laminate is bonded onto a thick wood-based core, with edging strips to cover the sides. Compact laminate has no core to protect, so there is nothing to seal where it is cut.

Seven benefits for a home kitchen

  • Waterproof all the way through

There is no chipboard core to swell, so water around the sink, a spill along a joint or steam from the kettle can't get in and blow the edge. For most people, that's the reason to choose it.

  • A slim, modern look

At 13mm, it's around a third of the thickness of a traditional 38mm worktop, giving runs and islands a clean, contemporary edge.

  • Hard-wearing

The pressed, solid sheet stands up to the knocks, spills and everyday wear of a busy family kitchen.

  • Easy to keep clean

The smooth surface wipes clean with warm water and a mild household cleaner. There's no sealing, oiling or re-finishing, ever.

  • That crisp black edge

Every edge shows a fine black line, which gives compact laminate its distinctive, designer look whichever colour you choose.

  • Over 100 colours

Plain colours, woodgrains and patterned decors across Fundermax, Polyrey and Pfleiderer, so you can match your cabinets or pick a contrasting island.

  • Made to measure, edges included

We cut every worktop to your sizes, give every edge a slight round as standard and add a corner radius free of charge if you want one.

The black core: what you'll see

Every compact laminate colour we sell has a solid black core. Wherever a worktop is cut or its edge rounded, you'll see a thin black line, on white and woodgrain colours too. Many people choose compact laminate partly for that crisp edge.

If you'd rather your edges matched the surface, compact laminate isn't the right material, and our other kitchen worktops with edging strips will suit you better. Not sure? The sample chart shows the colours and the black core before you decide.

Things to know before you buy

  • Plain rectangles online

We sell plain rectangular worktops online, cut to your sizes. Machined joints, sink and hob cut-outs, and oversized jumbo sheets are available as a bespoke, quoted service: send us your kitchen plan.

  • Holes are cut on site

Your fitter cuts sink, hob and tap holes on site, using tooling suitable for compact laminate. Fundermax and Polyrey both specify rounded inside corners of at least 5mm on every cut-out, rather than sharp corners.

  • Joining two worktops

Every edge is rounded, so your fitter trims the joining ends square on site before joining. Fundermax recommends worktop connectors rather than glue alone. We don't supply jointing kits, adhesive or brackets.

  • It's heavy

Solid 13mm laminate is dense and heavy for its thickness. Delivery is kerbside: someone needs to be in to receive it, but you won't need to help unload. Have help on hand to carry the worktops inside.

Fitting and support: what the manufacturers say

Compact laminate is strong but thin, so it needs solid, level support. Your fitter should follow the installation guidance for the brand you choose. Here are the key figures from two of the manufacturers' own documents.

Fitting guidance from the manufacturers' own documents
  Fundermax Polyrey
Unsupported overhang Up to 50mm; add bracing for anything larger Up to 100mm at the front and edges; up to 250mm on islands or tables with a suitable, stable support structure
Cabinets and supports A stable base with air circulation; reinforce weak cabinets On open cabinets, supports no more than 600mm apart
Expansion Allow 2mm of expansion space per metre of worktop See the installation manual
Cut-out corners Inside radius of at least 5mm Corners rounded to at least 5mm

Choosing a Pfleiderer colour? Your fitter should follow Pfleiderer's own installation guidance. Planning a breakfast bar? Any overhang beyond the figures above needs a proper support structure, so plan brackets or legs with your fitter before you order.

Looking after your worktop

Day to day, wipe it with warm water and a soft cloth or sponge, with a little mild household detergent if needed, then rinse and dry. Avoid scouring pads, abrasive creams, bleach and harsh acidic or alkaline cleaners, and wipe up spills promptly. Fundermax and Polyrey both advise a trivet or pan stand for hot pans, and Fundermax advises always using a chopping board rather than cutting on the surface. There's no sealing, oiling or re-finishing, ever.

How ordering works

  1. Choose your colour from over 100 compact laminate colours.
  2. Enter each worktop in the Worktop Cut List: length along the front edge, depth front to back. Then pick a corner radius (none, 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100mm) and which corners get it. Both are free.

  4. We cut and finish your worktops in Bolton and deliver them kerbside in 2–4 working days.

Longest in one piece: 2650mm (2570mm in Polyrey colours). Deepest: 1824mm in Fundermax, 2000mm in Pfleiderer and 2020mm in Polyrey colours.

Common questions

Is compact laminate good for kitchen worktops?

Yes. It's waterproof all the way through, slim, hard-wearing and easy to clean, which suits the busiest surface in a home. The trade-offs are the visible black edge, a higher price than standard laminate, and sink and hob holes that your fitter cuts on site.

Is compact laminate waterproof?

Yes. It's solid laminate right through, with no chipboard or MDF core, so it won't swell if water gets into a cut edge or joint.

Can I put hot pans on a compact laminate worktop?

Use a trivet or pan stand. The manufacturers advise against putting hot pans or anything straight from the oven directly onto the surface.

Why does compact laminate have a black edge?

Every colour we sell has a solid black core, so a thin black line shows wherever the worktop is cut or rounded. Order the sample chart to see it before you decide.

How thick is a compact laminate worktop?

Ours are 13mm, around a third of the thickness of a traditional 38mm worktop.

Do you cut holes for sinks and hobs?

Not as standard. We supply plain rectangles and your fitter cuts the holes on site. If you'd rather we did it, it's available as a bespoke service: contact us for a price.

How long does delivery take?

Free kerbside delivery to the UK mainland in 2–4 working days. Someone needs to be in to receive it, but you won't need to help unload.
